All animals (this includes humans too) see, understand and feel the pain or happiness that other neighbouring animals (this includes humans too!) are experiencing, within their own subconscious minds. They are thus affected and influenced by the pain and happiness of others - even though they are their present rivals, foes or friends; thus they sympathize or feel good at it in their inner hearts. Subconscious mind is unique in that it is always of good nature basically.
